If the portfolio isn’t up to your standards, simply move on to another candidate. You should also skip a candidate if the portfolio seems incomplete or not well thought out.

Keep in mind that you will be sharing not only your home, but also your most intimate ideas about what you want your design to be with the designer that you choose. For this reason, it is very important that you are comfortable with the person, as well as able to effectively communicate with each other. This factor can be even more important than their design skills. If the designer does not listen well, or pays no attention to what you desire, then being the best interior designer in town will not do a bit of good for your needs.

As you evaluate a designer, be sure to pay as much attention to their listening and communication skills as you do to their portfolio. If you can find a way to balance their skills as a designer with their communication skills, you should be able to find an interior designer to work with who will give you a new room or home design that knocks your socks off.
